Application of hydrological model to assess river flow in the transboundary cryosphere and data-scarce watershed, a case study: Chitral-Kabul river basin (C-KRB) in Pakistan

Abstract Severe water crises in Pakistan and growing demands Afghanistan requires a bilateral agreement on Kabul River basin (KRB) but precise stream-flow data is critical matter. The aim of this research to assess the data-scarce transboundary Chitral-Kabul (C-KRB) using hydrologic modeling approach. HEC-HMS model was applied for predicting peak-flow simulating runoff C-KRB. calibrated over period 2010–2011 (66% all data) validated 2012 (33% data). Our findings showed that Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) R2 were 0.70 0.89 respectively. simulated peak-outflow 850 m3/s 1st August which quite close observed 861 3rd 2012. difference (Dp) −4.45% deviation volume (Dv) −26.95%. It concluded can be as rapid tool future flow freely accessible rainfall snow cover data. Furthermore, approach utilized users, developer planners provide first-hand information formulating any shared KRB between Afghanistan.
